Drivers may not be aware of a little-known rule on motorways in Scotland that could land you with a £100 fine.
Scotland has penalties for red X breaches - drivers here could receive points on their licence on top of the hefty fine.
It comes as announcement that cameras will be upgraded on smart motorways in parts of the UK has warned that drivers who breach red 'X' lane closures will be fined.
National Highways plans to upgrade 100 smart motorway cameras in England, which would allow police to issue £100 fines to drivers without having to spot them in the act.
This may leave Scots wondering how new red X rules apply to them and if there is planned expansion here in Scotland.
Here is key information on Scotland's red X rules, smart motorways, and whether the upgraded cameras will be rolled out here.
Red X rules in Scotland
A spokesman from Transport Scotland, which is national transport agency of Scotland, has said that there are already red X rules here in Scotland.
The spokesman said: "It is already an offence to drive under a red X in Scotland and road users who ignore these are committing a motoring offence and could be prosecuted."
The police could hand out a range of penalties that includes both a fine and penalty points on your licence.
Are there smart motorways in Scotland?
A smart motorway is a road which use technology to regulate traffic, they do not have a hard shoulder as most standard motorways do, sometimes a lane is closed off to act as a 'dynamic hard shoulder'.
There are smart motorways in Scotland, with sections of the M90 and M9 using Actively Managed Hard Shoulders (AMHS).
However, there are no 'All Lanes Running measures', as there are in the English motorways that are being upgraded. The Transport Scotland spokesman said "We do not have Smart Motorways of the type in operation in England."
Will Scotland be a part of the camera expansion?
Scotland is not included in planned the expansion of cameras announced by National Highways, which will only include English motorways.
Transport Scotland has said that we already have a camera system set up on the M90 where the police could issue a minimum penalty of £100 and 3 penalty points in the form of a fixed penalty notice for driving offences.
National Highways aims to upgrade it's 100 smart cameras by September of 2022, and while there are no plans for camera expansions or upgrades in Scotland, it could be implemented if successful in England.
