Driving fund in memory of much-loved instructor needs support to continue

A scholarship set up in memory of a much-loved driving instructor is appealing for more funds help youngsters on the road to success.

The aim of the East Kilbride Driving Scholarship (EKDS) is to raise funds to teach youngsters to drive for free meaning those who may otherwise struggle can get behind the wheel more easily.

It was inspired by George McLaughlin and is now run by and on behalf of all East Kilbride and District Driving Instructors.

George passed away suddenly at his home in St Leonards in May 2020, aged just 67, and was well-known face in the wider community with a huge convoy of learner cars turning out to pay tribute to him on the day of his funeral.

Colleagues then set about creating a fitting legacy for George and the scholarship was born.

And, movingly, the first recipient of funding for lessons was his grandson, Jack Helsby, who he had promised to take out on lessons prior to his retirement.

Driving instructor, Susan Miller, who heads up the scholarship with colleague Alan Agnew, told Lanarkshire Live : "Driving is such an important life skill to learn giving people confidence, better job prospects and independence in life.

"We are absolutely delighted to share the exciting news that Callum Forrester, our latest participant of our scheme, has just passed his driving test on his first attempt and with only one minor fault.

"Congratulations Callum from all of us.

"We know how much driving will mean to him and change his life.

"Callum follows Jack, who was our first successful pass in the scholarship and George's grandson."

Last year friends and family of George gathered at Whitelee Windfarm for a sponsored walk with funds going towards the scholarship, with more than £1700 raised.

But now more support is needed.

"Our funds are low after getting our second participant through their test," Susan went on.

"And we are really keen to get another pupil started.

"If you are in a position to, it would be amazing if you could donate whatever you can to this great cause to help teenagers develop and learn new life skills.

"If you know of anyone who could be a potential candidate for the EKDS, please contact me on sm-cs@hotmail.com explaining who and why you think they would be suitable.

"We shall also be carrying out some sponsored events ourselves shortly to raise funds, so you can support us in lots of different ways."

Donations can be made online to sort code 60-83-71; account no 04654880 and account name is either Alan Agnew or Susan Miller.
