'Drives me mad' - why Roy Keane was left fuming with Tyrell Malacia in Man United vs Reading

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was furious with Tyrell Malacia at half-time in the win over Reading after he switched off to allow the visitors a chance just before the interval.

United had piled on the pressure in the first 45 minutes against their Championship opponents but had struggled to find the breakthrough. Marcus Rashford did have the ball in the back of the net but VAR adjudged Wout Weghorst to be offside in the build-up.

With the match creeping towards half-time, the Royals nearly went in ahead but Junior Hoilett was denied superbly by David de Gea. At the interval, Keane lambasted Malacia for not being aware of the danger at the time.

He told ITV Sport: "Honestly, what are these defenders thinking? It drives me mad, it’s like he [Malacia] is surprised somebody is next to him.

"Just switch on, be aware of what’s around you on a football pitch. Drives me crazy."

Fortunately for United and Keane, the second half proved to be much better across the board from the Reds. Casemiro scored twice in four minutes to put Erik ten Hag's men in complete control.

Andy Carroll was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 65th minute before Fred made it three just moments later. Amadou Salif Mbengue scored a consolation goal but it was United who progressed with ease.

United will discover their opponents in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday evening. Ties in the fifth round will be played in midweek on the week commencing Monday, February 27.
