Drivers warned as new rule will see 'avalanche' of fines from June

New rules coming into force at the start of June could see drivers hit with an 'avalanche' of fines, according to the RAC. Councils across the country are being given the power to enforce box junctions, illegal turning and misuse of one-way streets, but experts fear it will mean a large number of 'unfair' fines.

The Department for Transport (DfT) will begin accepting applications from councils to issue fines for more traffic offences and will be able to issue penalty charge notices (PCNs) for offences from June 1. Yellow boxes are used to ensure traffic flows smoothly through busy junctions and motorists should only enter them when their exit is clear or they are waiting to turn right.

But the RAC is concerned that many have “design flaws” such as being too large or having buildings or street furniture obstructing the view of where they end, causing drivers to be trapped through no fault of their own. The situation can be compounded by faded lines which are difficult to see.
