Hordes of drivers have been seen queueing outside a petrol station in Pembrokeshire due to the unbelievably cheap prices of fuel there. Motorists endured long waits at the Eastgate Garage in Narberth on Friday afternoon as the station is offering unleaded petrol and diesel at 129.9 pence per litre.
Garage owner Vijay Jaganathan said people were travelling for miles to “check whether it was actually true” after seeing pictures of the prices on social media. “It has gone a bit crazy,” Mr Jaganathan, 41, told WalesOnline on Friday evening after one of his busiest ever days since he took over the running of the garage in 2018.
The garage - which has recently changed from Murco to Texaco - has been closed for ten weeks while it increased its fuel capacity. “While we were Murco we had very small tanks so we were not able to buy fuel in bulk which means the fuel wasn’t cheap,” he continued. “We are the only station in the area so we wanted to expand so we approached Texaco and we have been closed for ten weeks while we increased capacity.
“Now we have a capacity of 38,000 litres for diesel when previously we only had capacity for 8,000 litres, and 8,000 litres for unleaded which was previously 4,000.”
According to the RAC the current average price for unleaded is 145.01 pence per litre and for diesel is 155.13 pence per litre. Mr Jaganathan said he thinks his garage can keep prices low due to his large capacity in comparison to other garages.
On the long queues, he said: “The queues on Friday have been very long. People have been queueing up all the way and blocking the roads. We’ve had so many people we have been trying to direct people on where they can park to wait and where they can stop the car.
“People have travelled from Pembroke, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Carmarthen. One couple from Carmarthen said they’d come to just see whether the prices are real or not. They were sad they couldn’t fill up more.”
Mr Jaganathan told the Western Telegraph he had the cheapest prices in the UK. He said: "These prices are an opening offer, but they will definitely continue with our aim of being the cheapest around. We are currently the cheapest in the UK - this has been confirmed to me by Texaco."
