Drivers hit by biggest monthly fuel price hike on record - despite 5p tax cut

Drivers were hit by the largest monthly spike in fuel prices on record last month, amid rising oil costs and the war in Ukraine.

The RAC says the average cost of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts rose by 11.6p from the beginning of March to the end the month, rising to 163.3p. And diesel prices rose even more sharply, climbing by a whopping 22.1p per litre in March to 177.3p.

Those surges broke the national record even with the 5p per litre cut in fuel duty imposed by Chancellor Rishi Sunak on March 23. That was worth a saving of 6p per litre owing to the impact on VAT.
