Driver 'shaken up' as woman taken to hospital after 'serious' crash

A driver was "shaken up" by a "serious" crash in Wirral, which resulted in a woman being taken to hospital.

Emergency services were called to Old Chester Road, close to Bebington railway station, at around 9.10am this morning (June 22), following reports of a collision involving a Renault Kadjar and a woman in her 60s. There was a huge police presence at the scene, and a partial road closure, extending onto Bebington Road, was in place.

One eyewitness told the ECHO that "all you could hear was sirens" and there "must have been 20 police cars" in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Further alarm stirred amongst locals when an air ambulance arrived at the scene, however the aircraft left shortly after 10.30am, with the woman instead being taken to hospital by road.

The driver of the vehicle, who remained at the scene to assist police with their enquiries, told the ECHO they were "really shaken up" following the crash. They said: "I came around the corner and a woman was crossing the road with another man. She had nearly got across but I just clipped her and she fell and hit her head."

The driver's main concern was the condition of the woman, who is currently being assessed in hospital after sustaining a head injury. They said: "I just hope that the lady is okay."

A local shopkeeper said that he saw "around six" ambulances going past in the wake of the collision. Another shop owner, Nigel Jones, told the ECHO that the precariously placed crossing on the junction between Bebington Road and Old Chester Road has caused a number of problems before.

He said: "There were loads of police after the collision. There's always accidents around here." Nigel said that he is even considering getting a camera fitted due to the issues with the crossing.

Whilst it is unknown how long the police cordon will remain in place, according to traffic alert system Inrix, Old Chester Road is still closed in both directions. There is also slow traffic due to accident investigation work from Ashbrook Terrace to Bebington Road railway station.

People are advised to access the station via the entrance near Aldi.

Police are now appealing for information about the incident and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dashcam footage or CCTV which could assist the investigation, to call their Matrix Roads Policing Unit on 0151 777 5747.
