Driver dies after Mercedes van bursts into flames outside police and fire station

A van driver has died after his vehicle caught fire outside a police station.

The tragedy happened this morning outside Bromsgrove Police and Fire Station, Birmingham Live reports.

A white Mercedes Sprinter van pulled into the station's car park and caught fire at about 7.30am.

Sadly the driver of the vehicle, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Mercia Police have said it was an "isolated incident with no further threat to the public".

Detective Inspector Gareth Lougher said: “We would like to reassure the community that we believe this to be an isolated incident, with no further threat to the public.

"Investigations to establish what happened this morning are now underway, and we would encourage anyone who may have seen the vehicle in the area around the time of the incident to contact police.

“This is a terribly sad incident and our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time.”

Parts of Slideslow Drive, which were closed shortly after the incident, have now reopened.

Police are working now with the fire service to investigate the incident and would ask anyone who was in the area at the time who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage to contact West Mercia Police quoting incident 151i of 10 April, 2022 by using visiting the website https://www.westmercia.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/.

Alternatively, if you have information but don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers. You can contact them at https://crimestoppers-uk.org/ or 0800 555 111.
