A DRIVER was caught doing 139mph on a Scottish road on Monday morning, police say.
Officers in Aberdeenshire reported detecting a 30-year-old man in an Audi TT hitting the speed on the morning of August 21.
The driver was on the A90 Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) between Cleanhill and Stonehaven at around 10:40am.
At 139mph, the Audi was alleged to be going almost double the legal 70mph speed limit.
Officers said a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Sergeant Eoin Maxwell, from the North East Road Policing Unit, said: “Road policing officers continue to patrol the north-east road network, influencing driver behaviour through education and enforcement when necessary. Speeding continues to be a contributing factor in a significant number of serious and fatal road traffic collisions.
“The Highway Code states the stopping distance of a car travelling at 70mph is 96 metres. A driver travelling at 139mph would require an estimated 294 metres to stop – the length of about two football pitches further than a motorist travelling at the speed limit for this stretch of road.”
The speed is not the highest ever recorded on a Scottish road.
In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was given five months in jail for driving at 156.7mph, also on the A90.
And in 2009, hairdresser Neil Purves pled guilty after being caught riding his Suzuki motorbike at 166mph on the A702 near West Linton, Peeblesshire.
