Driver caught at 124mph in VW Golf is banned from road

A motorist who was caught driving at 124mph on a dual carriageway has been banned from the road. Joshua Honeysett activated a speed camera along the 70mph A30 at Babylon Hill, near Sherborne, Dorset, as he reached the dizzying speed in his Volkswagen Golf.

At first the 23-year-old told police the £24,000 VW Golf, which had a private plate reading M70BHP, no longer belonged to him and that he had sold it. But he later admitted to driving at 54mph above the speed limit was banned from the road for 28 days by magistrates in Weymouth.

Chris Baker, prosecuting, said: "At 6:39 in the evening on August 18, 2021, Joshua Honeysett activated a speed camera which recorded a speed of 124 miles per hour on a 70 mile per hour road. "A notice of prosecution was delivered to his address. He stated he was not driving and had sold the car.

"He later admitted he had been the driver of that vehicle at that time."

Joneysett, a builder of Melbury Park, Dorchester, said he had made a 'careless decision' to speed but pleaded with the judge not to suspend his licence. He said: "It was a careless decision but I'm worried about losing my licence and not being able to work. I need my car to get to work."

As well as being banned, Honeysett was also fined £500 and ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge and £110 in court costs. Louise Dutton, the presiding magistrate, warned Mr Honeysett: "If you drive while disqualified you will be committing a serious offence and might be sent to prison."
