GUWAHATI: A man driving a Rongali Bihu troupe in an inebriated state, lost control of the vehicle in northern Assam’s Biswanath district, killing five teenagers in the early hours of Sunday.
The pickup vehicle from Tokoubari to Uttar Karibil was carrying 35 members of a Bihu troupe home when the accident occurred, said a senior district administration official. The five teenagers have been identified as Sonjoy Bosumotary, Polymon Bosumotary, Bornali Boro and Budhemoti Boro of Uttar Karibil under Helem police station in Biswanath. Another victim, Radhika Doimari, was a resident of Puroni Geraz Bormajan in the same district.
Dipan Barman, sub-divisional officer (civil), Gohpur, said the accident occurred mainly because of speeding by the driver who was inebriated and absconding. The driver, identified as Moon Gogoi, is from Sivasagar district.
PM Narendra Modi, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled the deaths. “I am saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Biswanath district of Assam. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest: PM @narendramodi,” PMO India tweeted.
