KOLKATA: In the largest drug haul in Bengal in recent times, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday night seized 16.1kg heroin from three passengers — two Kenyans and a Malawian — at Kolkata airport who came to India from Dubai. The market value of the seized contraband is approximately Rs 113 crore.
The DRI officials, working on specific inputs, nabbed the flyers arriving from Cape Town — two women and a man in their mid-thirties. The two Kenyans came to India on a medical visa and they showed that to the DRI officials. They claimed that they were going to New Delhi for medical purposes.
The officials, however, started conducting searches. They found packets of contraband inside the false bottom partition in their trolley luggage. Gradually, the officials found about 14 packets of the contraband kept inside plastic zip pouches concealed inside bags. The drugs, officials feel, were destined for Delhi. “The investigation is at a very preliminary stage and nothing much can be said at this juncture,” said a DRI official.
