DREY WRIGHT admits St Johnstone are new-look team who are still learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
But the McDiarmid Park midfielder is confident that he and his teammates will begin to click and will soon be clocking up further points on the Premiership table.
Saints have three points from their opening four games, having won one, and lost three. And they now head to Tynecastle on Sunday to face an in-form Hearts.
“We have had three defeats but in every game we are feeling better, more together,” Wright said. “It’s going to be tough because we are still learning players strengths and weaknesses and how they get through the game. But there’s positives to take. We dust ourselves down and go again.
“You can’t make a case against the consistency of playing with the same players. It’s under looked in terms of just chucking people in and expecting them to do a job.
“It doesn’t work like that in football. It’s a new team and it’s still early days in the season. We were delighted to get the win against Motherwell. We have had three poor results but there are positives in there.”
Saints failed to make a huge impression against Aberdeen on Saturday at McDiarmid Park. Jim Goodwin’s side ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a stunning Leighton Clarkson free-kick.
The scoreline looked tight on paper, but ultimately the Dons could and should have won by a bigger margin.
Wright continued: “We got into good areas. A few balls into the box and we could have had more quality but when the ball is on the deck with a bit more decisiveness and a clinical edge, we could carve out more opportunities.
“We played good football at times and were undone by a wonder strike. The only time we’ve scored the first goal this year we’ve gone on to win the game.
“We know how important it is, we had enough chances to get it today but we just have to take the positives that we can at the moment and move on to next week.
“The reaction against Aberdeen was a bit slower than we would have liked. Against Motherwell we couldn’t have asked for a better one to go on and get another goal.
“But I felt after their goal Aberdeen stepped up a gear and we had to ride a wave for a bit. But the manager made a change of shape at the right time and got us back into the game.
“It got us on the front foot but we couldn’t convert it into a goal.”
On a personal note, Wright is delighted to be back playing consistently after a failed stint at Easter Road with Hibernian.
He added: “I’m happy to be back. The most important thing for me was playing regularly and I feel I’m getting stronger every week.
“It was an easy bedding in period as I’ve been here before and a lot of the guys are still here. It feels similar to how it was before. I’m happy to be back and playing.
“That’s four games I have started in a row. I got that towards the end of last year but the previous time was nearly four years ago. Getting that consistent run is what I have been crying out for and hopefully, you’ll start to see the best of me soon.”
