Dreamed of being a minion, Shrek or SpongeBob? Universal’s newest theme park is now hiring

Universal Kids Resort is on the hunt for its next star — or starfish — as the new family-focused theme park in Frisco, Texas, ramps up hiring ahead of its 2026 opening.

The resort is holding virtual auditions to recruit actors, costumed character performers, and movers or physical performers who will bring to life characters from popular Universal franchises, including “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Shrek” and “Despicable Me.” Applicants must be at least 18 and submit an online interest form, with callbacks scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 9 and March 11.

When it opens sometime this year, Universal Kids Resort will feature seven themed lands inspired by Universal’s most iconic films and TV shows. These include DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp and Puss in Boots Del Mar, Illumination’s Minions vs. Minions: Bello Bay Club, Jurassic World Adventure Camp, DreamWorks’ TrollsFest, Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom and an original area called Isle of Curiosity.

Families visiting the park may run into characters including Shrek and Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots, Minions like Kevin, Stuart and Bob, “Trolls” favorites Poppy and Branch, SpongeBob SquarePants and friends, and characters inspired by the Dreamworks show on Netflix, “Gabby’s Dollhouse,” in the central Isle of Curiosity.

The park will also feature interactive dinosaur encounters in the Jurassic World-themed land.

“When creating Universal Kids Resort, we leaned into that childlike curiosity and invited play to be our guide,” Molly Murphy, President of Universal Creative, said in a news release. “Every detail was designed through a child’s eyes from signs at their height to colors that invite them in. The result is a park that celebrates the joy of being a kid — where imagination isn’t just encouraged, it’s embedded in every attraction, space, and experience.”

Performers interested in joining Universal Kids Resort can create an audition profile with their skills and experience for upcoming casting opportunities. Applicants can upload an updated photo or resume and highlight specific talents to help casting teams match them with suitable performance roles.

Profiles remain active in the system for six months, after which performers are notified by email to submit a new profile if they wish to continue being considered for future opportunities.

Applicants should wear comfortable, moveable clothing to the audition and avoid costumes, heavy makeup or wigs.

In addition to the park’s attractions, the adjacent Universal Kids Resort Hotel will accommodate up to five or six guests per room. Amenities will include the quick-service Curiosity Cafe, a full-service bar, an outdoor pool, a fitness room and a game room.

An official opening date for the park has not yet been announced.
