Dramatic pictures show huge Highlands blaze as flames tear through woodlands

Dramatics pictures have shown a wild blaze firefighters spent more than five hours battling in the Highlands.

Crews from across the region were scrambled to woodlands off the A839 near Rogart, Sutherland, after a wildfire took hold around 1.45pm yesterday.

Teams from Lairg, Golspie, Dornoch and Balintore tackled the flames on "extremely challenging ground".

Firefighters were seen on a steep hillside battling the blaze, which sent thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.

Balintore Fire Station shared pics and video from the scene of the "ferocious" fire.

Despite the woodlands being damp from recent rain, the footage shows flames taking hold among the heather and trees, with embers and ashes flying past the camera.

No one was injured during the wildfire.

The four crews left the scene after extinguishing the blaze.

Sharing images of the incident on Twitter, Balintore Fire Station wrote: "Crew paged to a wildfire at Rogart along with crews from Laird, Golspie and Dornoch.

"A fire front on extremely challenging ground took over 5 hours to bring to a safe conclusion."

Later, they posted video footage, adding: "A clip showing the intensity of today's wildfire.

"Despite all the rain of late and the ground being sodden, the whins burn ferociously.

"Hard, hot work with back packs and beaters."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.44pm on Tuesday, March 1, to reports of a fire in the open off the A839 near Rogart.

"Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene, where crews worked to extinguish a fire on a hillside approximately one mile in length affecting heather and trees.

"There were no reported casualties.

"Firefighters left after making the area safe."
