Dramatic footage shows hero neighbours kick down door to save man from Edinburgh flat fire

This is the dramatic moment two men rescued their neighbour from a terrifying flat fire in Edinburgh.

The residents rushed to help the man as flames took hold of the top-floor property in Peffer Place, Craigmillar on Wednesday night. The hero pair were caught on camera rushing up the tenement stairs before kicking down the front door of the burning property at around 6pm.

In horror footage shared with Edinburgh Live, a man wearing red trousers can be seen using the bannister behind for support as he desperately tries to get inside.

As he kicks the door open, thick clouds of black smoke come bursting out as he yells to the man to run for his life.

He is heard shouting: "Can you get to the door?" Getting no response, he shouts again: "The door is open if you can run."

The selfless hero calls out one more time as he covers his t-shirt with his face due to the thick smoke choking him, before fleeing the fire.

Emergency services confirmed that two people were taken to hospital as a result of the blaze - one has reportedly been released from hospital while another remains in NHS care.

Locals later told how they had to grab anything they could while fleeing their smoke-filled homes and were left standing on the street for five hours as hero firefighters battled the inferno.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 6.06pm on Wednesday, 24 May to reports of a dwelling fire in Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances to the city's Peffer Street, where firefighters met by a well-developed fire within a four-storey building.

"Crews extinguished the fire and made the area safe before leaving the scene.

"Two casualties were transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by the Scottish Ambulance Service."
