It relates to an incident alleged to have occurred earlier this month.
Officers launched an investigation following reports a woman had been sexually touched by a man known to her on March 8.
Twenty-nine-year-old Burgess was arrested at Mascot Police Station on Monday afternoon.
In a statement the club said it was aware of the matter and was cooperating with authorities.
"The St George Illawarra Dragons have been made aware of a matter involving one of its players by the NRL Integrity Unit," the club said.
"The Dragons are working closely with all parties as the matter is under police investigation.
"The Dragons will be making no further comment at this stage."
The former South Sydney Rabbitohs player was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on April 13.
