Drag queens, 8ft piñatas and The Muppets lead HOME’s festive season

With the Christmas markets in full swing, wintery decorations dotted all over town, and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas already being blasted on repeat in supermarkets, it is safe to say that the festive season is well and truly upon us.

If you’re still feeling a bit of a Grinch, a whole plethora of events - including ice skating, film screenings and family-friendly grottos - are all taking place across Manchester over the next month to get you into that Christmas spirit.

Manchester’s HOME theatre will be hosting a variety of shows, screenings and comedy nights as part of its now-traditional festive calendar, which is supported by Auto Trader and is already underway. There’s adult-only sing-a-longs, family puppetry and, of course, The Muppet Christmas Carol.

We’ve taken a look at some of the highlights heading to HOME over the next month.

‘Who’s Holiday’

An adults-only comedy show featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race star Miz Cracker makes its European premiere at HOME on Wednesday (November 30).

The ‘wildly funny and heartfelt’ show from New York-based playwright Matthew Lombardo features a middle-aged Cindy Lou Who as she recalls the Christmas Eve she first met the Grinch and how her life has changed ever since.

‘Who’s Holiday’, which has previously been described by the New York Times as ‘a raunchy riff on a yuletide tale’, runs until December 3. Tickets, priced £10-£30, available here.

‘There’s a Rang-Tang in My Bedroom’

Supported by Greenpeace and Meat Free Monday, ‘There’s a Rang-Tang in My Bedroom’ is a magical mix of puppetry and music that’s aimed towards children aged 5-11.

The delightful show is inspired by the Greenpeace campaign film of the same name, alongside There’s a Monster in My Kitchen, and explores what we can all do to help our animal friends. The production features voiceovers by Emma Thompson, Doc Brown & Rag’n’Bone Man.

The show runs from December 9 to 23. Tickets are £12.50 (£10.50 concessions).

HOME Comedy Club

Some of the best names in the UK’s Black comedy circuit, including Marlon Davis, Annette Fagon and Slim, will take to the stage as HOME Comedy Club’s Christmas special Laff Til ya Fart.

MCed by Clayton Jones, the ‘authentic, musical and interactive stand-up experience’ promises to bring festive fun and is suitable for people aged 18+. Tickets £20.

‘Pleasure Seekers’

For two nights only, award-winning musical satirists Bourgeois & Maurice return to HOME with their latest show, which promises whip-smart songs, jaw-dropping outfits and, naturally, an 8ft piñata.

'Pleasure Seekers’ sees the cabaret siblings attempt to dedicate their lives to non-stop pleasure, and is expected to be a high-energy homage to hedonism ‘in all its filthy, fabulous glory’.

The show is suitable for people aged 16+, and runs Friday December 16 and Saturday December 17. Tickets £20 (Concessions £18).

Christmas Film Screenings

If you've ever wanted to see It’s a Wonderful Life, Cabaret or The Muppet Christmas Carol on the big screen, then now is your chance.

HOME will be screening a host of Christmas classics, alongside soon-to-be festive favourites like Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion Pinocchio and the movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical.

Screenings are running from now until December 30. More information here.
