Aaron Cockerill won't forget his first round at the Made in Himmerland tournament anytime soon after the high of a hole-in-one was soon replaced by an embarrassing low.
The Canadian star aced the famous 16th hole at the DP European Tour event, which took him to one under par and seemingly kept him in tournament contention. However, things quickly turned south when he recorded a quadruple bogey on the 17th, before a closing bogey made for a four over par 75.
Still, Cockerill still thought he had the hole-in-one to laud, especially given it came just seven days after his previous ace at the Omega European Masters. But the euphoria of the feat was soon ruined when he inadvertently got himself disqualified.
The 30-year-old forgot to sign his own scorecard, meaning his round was invalidated and his tournament over. According to SCOREGolf editor Jason Logan, it slipped Cockerill's mind amid" "all the chatter and celebration in the scoring trailer about his making another ace!"
The star then took to Twitter to all but confirm that version of events, posting: "Can confirm 2 aces in 7 days is pretty cool, although I didn’t exactly ‘validate’ it on the next," he posted. "And with some hole in one chatter in the recording area I forgot to sign my card and got DQ’d."
Golf fans were quick to see the funny side, with @gabehurl writing: "He only went and bloody did it again - then followed up with an 8 and then got DQ'd for forgetting to sign his card," while @ojessen added: "Crossing the t's and dotting the i's is important."
@trapper_jay joked: "Now that is a whole new meaning to #havinaday," and @FastLaw echoed the sentiments of many of the star's followers by posting: "Oh I'm laughing/crying. That sucks."
Cockerill is currently ranked 375th in the world. His best finishes so far in 2022 are a tied-second at the Magical Kenya Open and a tied third at the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain, although neither would have matched the drama he experienced in Denmark.
The DP World Tour, along with the PGA Tour, are currently under threat by the mass sums of money being offered to players to defect to LIV Golf. Next month's BMW PGA event at Wentworth will see rebel stars involved in what promises to be a tempestuous four days - with LIV players forbidden to wear their tour branding whilst competing.
