Dozens feared dead after migrant boat found adrift off Canary Islands

  • At least 80 people, including a baby, are feared to have died after a boat originally carrying around 128 migrants was adrift for 26 days off Spain's Canary Islands.
  • Spanish rescuers brought 45 survivors and five recovered bodies to Gran Canaria on Thursday morning, while survivors confirmed that more than 100 people were initially on board.
  • Inscriptions on the vessel's hull indicate that it had undertaken a weeks-long journey from Gambia in West Africa.
  • The tragedy occurred just a day after the Moroccan navy intercepted 201 migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands from Western Sahara.
  • The route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is considered one of the deadliest in the world, with stricter enforcement pushing migrants to attempt longer sea voyages.
