Downton Abbey 'set for comeback' eight years after final series aired

ITV drama Downton Abbey is reportedly returning for a seventh series. The show, which has now been off air for eight years, generated six series on television and two movie spin-offs.

The series focused on the Crawley family and how they navigated the world’s changes from 1912 to 1928. During its run it was awarded a Golden Globe and countless other accolades.

The production company behind Downton Abbey, which is the most Emmy nominated show in British history, is said to have started casting in the hopes of enticing big names back for a new series. Would you like to see another series? Let us know in the comments.

While talks are reportedly still in the early stages, insiders have told how bosses hope to be ready to return to screen by the end of 2024. A source inside the period drama, created and produced by Julian Fellows, told MailOnline: “There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about.

“There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens. There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favourite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended.”

The final instalment of the beloved show – which aired on Christmas Day in 2015, drew in a peak audience of 7.4million, and the fan demand for more of the series saw the cast return for two movies in 2019 and 2022.
