The Sue Gray report may still be published before the weekend, Downing Street has said.
No 10 has also confirmed it would hold discussions with the Commons Speaker if the report was received during the weekend.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It remains hypothetically possible to still publish it today or tomorrow.
“We have committed to publishing in the House, I think hypothetically it is not a requirement under the terms of reference, obviously we would want to do so at the earliest possible opportunity but we are not in control of at which point we are in receipt of the report.”

Asked what would happen if No 10 received it on Friday night, he said: “We would need to make a decision in conjunction with the Speaker about what he thought was acceptable, obviously balancing the significant public interest in having sight of the report.”
Downing Street has said it has not seen the Sue Gray report, a summary of it, or received any indication of what it contains.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “No sight whatsoever.”
He also said the PM has not spoken to the police in the parties investigation.
Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said the Sue Gray report 'needs to be published in full and as soon as possible.'
He told the PA news agency: “And I mean in full – not redacted, not edited, not a summary, not parts left out. In full.”
“After what everybody in the country’s been through in the last year or two with the pandemic, huge sacrifices have been made, the least that they’re entitled to is the truth about what the Prime Minister was up to.”
During a visit to Grimsby, Sir Starmer said of Ms Gray’s findings: “The most important thing is that we see the full report as it was delivered to the Prime Minister so that everybody can see for themselves her (Sue Gray’s) understanding, her establishment of the facts of what actually happened.”
