Dovestone Reservoir visitors issued warning ahead of sunny bank holiday weekend

People planning on visiting Dovestone Reservoir this bank holiday weekend have been warned it is likely to be very busy, and to not bring items that may risk fires breaking out.

Temperatures are set to reach 20+ degrees with the beauty spot a popular destination for tourists on a warm weekend. However, there is limited parking for the amount of visitors Dovestone's attracts.

Just two weeks ago nearby residents hit out at dangerous and illegal parking at the Oldham attraction as the warm weather brought people from far and wide. There is parking for around 125 vehicles at the Bank lane and Binn Green car parks, but countless more people visit the area during periods of good weather, which has repeatedly caused problems in the past.

Hot weather and increased visitor numbers has also led to highly damaging fires. It is a criminal offence to start fires in the area, including lighting barbecues.

During particularly hot periods last year fires started deliberately caused long lasting damage to the Saddleworth Moor area, with a police investigation launched.

The RSPB, which partly manages the site, has urged people to plan alternative parking for visiting the reservoir as the main car parks are likely to fill up early. They have also reiterated that any types of fire, including BBQs and camp stoves, are not allowed anywhere on the site.

An RSPB Dovestone post said: "Looks to be a warm weekend & Dove Stone likely to get busy. Parking limited so please consider a Plan B & please remember: no BBQs, fires, camp stoves etc allowed anywhere on site & take your litter home. If you see smoke/flames on the hill call 999. Nature thanks you."

The reservoir is owned by United Utilities and managed by RSPB in partnership with them.
