A double murder charge has been laid after police discovered two bodies on a rural property two weeks apart.
The body of a 59-year-old man was found by police in a shed on a property at Gurranang, about 25km north of Grafton in northern NSW, on Monday afternoon.
The discovery was made as police combed the address for clues two weeks after a 79-year-old man's body was found inside a home on the estate.
"(Police) had attended the property to make further inquiries, they did not anticipate what they found," Coffs-Clarence Police District Commander Superintendent Joanne Schultz told reporters on Tuesday.
She described the scene as extremely confronting and clearly traumatic.
A 32-year-old man from Gurranang was arrested at a hospital in Grafton, where he was receiving treatment, about midday on Tuesday.
He was taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with two counts of murder and stealing a motor vehicle.
The man was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court on Wednesday.
Police believe the 59-year-old man died in the past 24 to 48 hours, two weeks after police first descended the rural acreage to investigate the older man's death.
"The scene was not maintained for the entirety of that time," Supt Schultz said.
The two deceased men were known to each other, with the younger man was visiting from out of town, Supt Schultz said.
"We're yet to establish the relationship with the 32-year-old male," she said.
The deceased men appeared to have suffered similar injuries.
