Double homicide at University of Colorado rocks Colorado Springs community

Students look outside their dorm window in the Village at Alpine Valley housing, Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, as police investigate a shooting on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus in Colora

Authorities in Colorado Springs are making progress in the investigation of a tragic double homicide that occurred on the University of Colorado campus. The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Sealy Rain Montgomery of Pueblo, Colorado, and 24-year-old Samuel Knopp of Parker, Colorado. While Montgomery was not a student at the university, Knopp was a student at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

The incident unfolded on Friday morning when police responded to a call of shots fired on campus. Upon arrival, officers discovered both Montgomery and Knopp in a dorm room, each with at least one gunshot wound. The specifics on the cause and manner of death have not been determined by the coroner at this time.

Colorado Springs police have emphasized that this tragedy appears to be an isolated incident between individuals who were acquainted with each other, rather than a random attack targeting the school or other students. As the investigation progresses, authorities have refrained from releasing details about any potential suspects or leads, citing the ongoing and complex nature of the case.

In a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims, the police chief acknowledged the heartbreaking nature of the situation and affirmed the commitment of the Colorado Springs Police Department to seeking justice for the lives lost.

The authorities are working diligently on the investigation, maintaining open communication with the families of the victims and collaborating closely with the university's police department. Updates on the case are being awaited as law enforcement continues to dedicate resources to resolving this tragic event.

As students and the community grapple with the shock of this incident, the reassurance from officials that the situation is under investigation and not a threat to the broader campus community is a source of comfort during this challenging time. The University of Colorado in Colorado Springs is expected to resume normal operations as the investigation unfolds.
