Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used high pressure hose reel jets to tackle the fire. Plumes of smoke from the bus could be seen from miles away.
While emergency services tackled the blaze all traffic on the M58 was stopped for around one hour. One lane of traffic was opened when the fire was under control.
Traffic was queuing for miles between Kirkby and junction three (Stanley Gate) due to the lane closures.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said there are not believed to be any injuries as a result of the incident.
Once the fire was extinguished the shell of the bus was completely destroyed with the top deck falling in on itself.
Pictures taken by Merseyside Police and National Highways show how the bus looked almost unrecognisable.
All lanes of traffic on the M58 were opened at around 7pm, with vehicles unable to use the hard shoulder due to resurfacing work.
