Sadly after more tests, the doctors discovered Gavin had terminal cancer that had spread all over his body and in his brain. His condition deteriorated quickly and Gavin died just seven days later.
Gavin's two children Jacob, 27, and Jade, 34, have been left heartbroken by the shock loss of their dad in such a short space of time and are devastated.
His family have now set up a fundraising page to pay for the funeral and has been overwhelmed by donations from kind friends offering their services to put together a special celebration of his life. You can donate to the fundraiser here.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live Tora said: "He went into hospital and there was fluid on his lungs, they drained the fluid and then the hospital did further tests and found out he had cancer everywhere. He was my brother-in-law and the dad of my niece and nephew.
"Even though he and my sister Zoe got divorced 20 years ago we all stayed close as a family and he was a brilliant dad.
"Jacob stayed with his dad for a couple of years and they were really close. He hadn't worked recently due to having poor health not related to this but was always there for them.
"He was a really kind soul just a really nice and calm person who never said a bad word about anyone. His kids are heartbroken they didn't expect it at all he had health issues in the past and Jade had lost her mum in the last couple of years so it's absolutely devastating."

She continued: "At the end Zoe, Jacob and Jade were by his side, he deteriorated quickly and wasn't even aware he had terminal cancer because he had become unconscious and never woken up again.
"He had Covid in the hospital too so visitors were very limited and they didn't get to spend as much time with him."
The family are fundraising to pay for the funeral and give the kind dad the send-off he deserves, you can find out more and donate to the page here.
