DoorDash has a controversial warning for users who don't tip in advance

DoorDash app users will now encounter a pop-up notification that warns them that their food may get cold if they fail to tip the driver delivering their order in advance.

If users enter $0 as the tip amount, a prompt pops up on the app saying: “Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered – are you sure you want to continue? Dashers can pick and choose which orders they want to do. Orders that take longer to be accepted by Dashers tend to result in a slower delivery.”

The pop-up gives users the option to continue with or without adding a tip. Users also have the opportunity to add a tip while the driver is still working on their order 30 minutes after it's delivered.

Feedback from consumers about the new notification have been divided, with some X (formerly Twitter) users saying that tipping should be mandatory, and others saying that DoorDash should pay their workers more.

Currently, base pay for DoorDash drivers is between $2 to $10 for each delivery. Its U.S. drivers earn an average of $25 an hour at the most, including tips. All tips go to the driver 100%.

The new move seems to be DoorDash’s latest effort to increase tip transparency and pay for its over 13 million drivers after a series of strikes took place across the nation in recent years where its drivers were demanding higher wages.

In June, the company also made an effort to unveil an hourly minimum rate for its drivers, a choice it calls “Earn by Time.” The hourly rate can differ for each delivery.

“We know there are Dashers who prioritize reliability in their earnings, who simply want to get on the road and dash with an exact, upfront idea of how much they’ll earn for the time it takes to complete an order,” said DoorDash in its announcement. “Earn by Time was developed precisely with those Dashers in mind.”

The hourly rate only pays for active time on a delivery, meaning that drivers don’t get paid when waiting for orders or after an order is done. Also, dashes will end for drivers who reject too many orders.
