The door is open for the Nationals leader to take a tilt at a lower house seat at the next election and avoid a difficult battle to hold onto his Senate seat against a surging One Nation.

Matt Canavan would not confirm his switch to the seat of Capricornia, vacated by MP Michelle Landry, who on Friday announced she will not recontest the northern Queensland seat she has held since 2013.
