‘Doom Eternal’ will get the physical Nintendo Switch release it deserves

Doom Eternal was released back in March 2020, but Nintendo Switch owners had to wait until December of that same year to get their hands on the blood-splattered, first-person shooter. Shortly before the sequel to 2016’s Doom became available for the Switch however, Bethesda announced that physical versions would be pulled in favor of a digital-only release.

Now, more than a year later, Limited Run Games, have decided to take it upon themselves to give Doom Eternal a physical release for Switch. Pre-orders for “the Standard, SteelBook, Special, and Ultimate editions,” will be available on July, 8.

For those who are unfamiliar, Limited Run Games functions like an archive for physical media in gaming — the company was founded in 2015 and brings digital releases back to life in a literal sense. Aside from introducing physical equivalents to games that were initially released as digital-only, Limited Run also gives retro games the physical treatment.

Nitty-gritty —

Doom Eternal, released to widespread critical acclaim and has received some add-on content in the form of two separate DLCs, since the game’s launch two years ago. It’s unclear whether or not these DLCs will be included in Limited Run’s physical release, but the fact that it distinguished between different editions for the pre-order suggests that there will be separate content for each version.

All of those Switch users who were upset about the last-second call to pull the physical release of Eternal have been vindicated.

Doom is fosters a robust community despite first hitting shelves in 1993. John Romero, one of the co-creators of the original game, has made some waves in the news cycle recently after launching a new Doom II level to benefit Ukraine and announcing the release of a memoir.
