Donny van de Beek praises Manchester United teammate Harry Maguire's reaction to boos

Donny van de Beek praised Harry Maguire's reaction to being booed during Manchester United's pre-season friendly victory against Crystal Palace.

Maguire's name was jeered when the teams were read out before kick-off and his first few touches of the ball were also met by audible boos from a 76,000-strong crowd.

The United captain has been criticised following his poor performances last season, but Erik ten Hag has backed him to remain as skipper and hinted he will partner Lisandro Martinez in defence this season.

Maguire was unable to get back to stop Melbourne Victory from scoring on Friday night but his booing was surprising after he had been cheered before kick-off in that game.

His first touch of the ball saw him pass it straight out of play against Crystal Palace, but he responded strongly and performed well before being withdrawn just after the hour mark.

Van de Beek believes that shows Maguire's personality and praised the captain's display at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“I heard as well. I didn't know really what happened. But I think if I saw the game today I think Harry was playing really well," said Van de Beek.

“He was aggressive, he got so many balls, so that means he has a big personality.

“He has a lot of experience, so I think that's positive what he (showed), his performance today.”
