Donny van de Beek hints at imminent return despite Manchester United star being ruled out for the season

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has suggested he is closing in on a return to playing action ahead of schedule.

A serious knee injury suffered in January had seemingly ended the Dutchman’s campaign after surgery.

Yet, Van de Beek is continuing his recovery with work in the gym and has stated that a return to training on the pitch is imminent.

“I’m busy with my recovery after my injury and everything is going well,” he told MUTV.

“It’s hard to give you a time but we have to see how everything goes.

“I’m doing a lot of gym work and getting closer to being on the pitch, which is positive. I’m not far away.”

Van de Beek has just over a month left to prove his fitness and make a comeback this season.

United face six games in May before the FA Cup final with Manchester City on June 3, meaning Erik ten Hag is searching for reinforcements amid a bit of an injury crisis.

Bruno Fernandes is managing an ankle knock while Scott McTominay is struggling to shake off an unspecified issue that could end his season.

In defence, Raphael Varane is targeting a return at Wembley but Lisandro Martinez will not feature again after an operation on a foot injury.
