Donny van de Beek gets Manchester United empathy after Everton are hammered by Tottenham

Some Manchester United supporters have expressed sympathy towards midfielder Donny van de Beek following Everton's dismal 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Monday evening.

Two goals from Harry Kane, solitary strikes from Heung-min Son and Sergio Reguilon and an own-goal from Michael Keane condemned Everton to their biggest defeat of the season, further increasing their relegation worries. The Toffees now find themselves just one place and one point above the bottom three.

United loanee Van de Beek, who joined the Goodison Park club in the January transfer window in pursuit of regular first-team football, started the contest in north London, earning his fourth consecutive Premier League start in the process. However, it proved to be a night to forget for the Dutchman as he was substituted in the second half with Spurs already four goals to the good.

He was replaced just before the hour mark by Vitaliy Mykolenko. In what was a dismal all-round display from Everton, Van de Beek failed to impress, with his performances attracting a fair amount of criticism from the Toffees' supporters.

However, some United fans have expressed their sympathies to Van de Beek, pointing out how he has gone from barely getting a look in at Old Trafford to playing in a relegation dog fight. Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what some of them have had to say.

As you can see from the messages displayed above, some United supporters genuinely feel sorry for Van de Beek. He joined Everton in the hope of playing regularly and enjoying success.

However, their current form is not helping him discover what he was after. The Toffees are now in the thick of a relegation battle and the thought of them dropping into the Championship would have been unimaginable not that long ago.

Van de Beek has made five appearances for Frank Lampard's side so far, being beaten in four of them. The only victory he has so far experienced came in a 3-0 triumph over Leeds United.
