Donny van de Beek blow as Erik ten Hag asks key Man Utd transfer question

The theme of frustration continued for Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

With Cristiano Ronaldo absent due to illness, the Red Devils toiled to a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City and were spared the heartbreak of defeat after VAR ruled out a late James Maddison goal.

Kelechi Iheanacho had earlier given the Foxes the lead, only for Fred - one of United's only positive performers on the day - to tuck home a rebounded shot a couple of minutes later.

The result gave rivals the chance to move clear in the race for a top-four finish and as the Premier League season enters its home stretch, United are looking increasingly short of what's required to keep pace with those slightly above them.

Here are your latest Red Devils headlines after yet another setback.

Are United's top-four chances realistically over after the draw with Leicester? Let us know in the comments section below!

Van de Beek blow

Donny van de Beek has had mixed fortunes since his move to Everton on loan, with Sunday arguably the low point for the Dutch midfielder.

The playmaker was set to start for the Toffees at West Ham United, although an injury in the warm-up meant he was replaced by Mason Holgate in the XI. It's the second Premier League game in a row the former Ajax star has missed, having sat out the 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Van de Beek has shown glimpses of talent since joining the Merseyside club, although he has yet to offer the consistency and quality needed to suggest he can force his way into contention at Old Trafford next term.

Ten Hag questions

Momentum seems to be building behind Erik ten Hag possibly becoming the new manager of Manchester United, with the current Ajax coach said to be a preferred candidate within the club hierarchy.

With Ralf Rangnick unlikely to be continuing as boss beyond the current season, Ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino are said to be the most likely options. Reports suggest the Dutchman has already held talks over the soon-to-be vacant position.

Ten Hag is reported to have been inquisitive about United's transfer plans when he was interviewed for the job, with the club inconsistent in the market in recent years.

"He was reportedly interested in learning about their overall budget in the upcoming window, which players they could potentially sign and how the club plan to back him," it's added.

Targets identified

Ten Hag is said to already be considering possible additions at United, including one forward and one defender who he is currently working with at Ajax.

Winger Antony has been one of the standout players for the Amsterdam giants, with his darts in from the right flank and impressive productivity offering an exciting edge to the attack.

In addition to the Brazilian, Jurrien Timber is reported to be a target for Ten Hag. United's defence has been an issue throughout the campaign and the 20-year-old is said to be viewed as a potential short- and long-term solution to the leaky back line at Old Trafford.
