Pauline Hanson has defended her relationship with billionaire Gina Rinehart, saying the mining magnate has "done it tough" while denying taxpayers footed the bill for any part of her trip to Italy.

Speaking at a Seven West Media event in Perth, the One Nation leader was quizzed over her friendship with Australia's richest person.
