Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Newcastle United U21s: Player ratings from Papa John's Trophy clash

Newcastle United started their Papa John's Trophy campaign at Doncaster in a repeat of their clash against the EFL side back in 2018.

Back then the Longstaff brothers ran the show and Tom Allan, Cal Roberts and Elias Sorensen were all on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win. But United have struggled in the competition since the 2018/19 season when they made it to the last 16.

Here's the ratings from the players who tried to change that tonight in Donny.

Jude Smith 7

A clean sheet in regulation time and made some key saves.

Nathan Carlyon 7

A steady display and offered something going forward.

Remi Savage 7

Marshalled the defence well enough.

Alex Murphy 7

The summer signing from Galway won most of his duels against EFL opponents.

Jordan Hackett 6

Didn't get going but made one crucial block.

Joe White 6

A frustrating night in truth. Showed some nice touches and tried an audacious effort from the centre circle but picked up yellow card for late challenge and not everything came off for him. Needs to go on loan.

Jay Turner-Cooke 7

Was the most influential player in the 90 minutes. Man of the match despite penalty miss in shoot-out.

James Huntley 7

A battling display.

Dylan Stephenson 6

One big chance in first half. Another who needs a loan.

Michael Ndiweni 7

Worked hard and tried to give Newcastle an option. A positive display from the youngster albeit without a goal.

Kyle Crossley 7

Looked lively and worked hard

Subs

Lewis Miley 7 (for White 75)

Showed some great touches and saw a shot blocked. One to watch.

Josh Scott 6 (for Ndiweni 75)

Needed longer to get into the game.
