Donald Trump is clearly not over his fantasy of flaunting the Nobel Peace Prize someday. After all, how could Barack Obama have one and he doesn’t?
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to María Corina Machado for her work defending democracy in Venezuela. But, she dedicated it to the “suffering people of Venezuela” and to Trump “for his decisive support of our cause.” Hopping on the opportunity, Trump turned to his social-media megaphone, Truth Social, this weekend.
He then broadcast every flattering endorsement, nomination, and praise he could scavenge to prove that he deserved the award. Mind you, the results of the prize were announced a month ago. But it seems he’s still having nightmares about his failure. Trump made four almost-consecutive posts, sharing articles and posts emphasizing that he deserves the prize.
He first shared Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s Oct. 8 endorsement (via The Hill), which read: “While others talk about peace, President Trump is making it happen. Give this man a damn peace prize already.” The second post linked to an NY Post article about the winner, Machado, dedicating her prize to Trump. She said,
“I dedicated this award to the Venezuelan people and President Trump because I believe that’s absolutely fair. We, the Venezuelan people, are absolutely grateful to President Trump for the way he has supported democracy and freedom in the Americas.”
And the spree didn’t end yet. Trump went on to re-post former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s Oct. 11 post. It endorsed Machado’s dedication as “a bigger honor than if the Committee had given the prize directly to the President.” The Republican politician also sang praises for Trump, saying his “reach and ability to multitask is historic.”
Lastly, Trump scooped up an Oct. 9 Irish Independent article. This was about FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s endorsement of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Infantino reasoned that the President negotiated the Gaza peace deal, effectively ending a two-year struggle that killed millions. But let’s be real, it all reads like an attempt not to persuade others, but to persuade himself.
The Nobel Peace Prize is not a participation award, and it’s certainly not something you win by reposting praise. Trump’s record is far from spotless when it comes to bringing global “peace.” He might have negotiated the ceasefires, but why did he do it only when the nominations were nearing? Meanwhile, his domestic actions lean heavily toward authoritarianism.
The Caribbean boat strikes, the war on immigrants, and ICE raids on citizens all scream repression and crackdowns on dissent. That’s hardly the profile that fits a laureate of peace. But despite all that, his ego seems bruised. He is portraying him losing the prize not as a verdict but as an injustice. And now, he is reposting every endorsement as an attempt to reinforce a narrative he wants the world to accept.
