Lincoln to Trump: A history of assassination attempts made against US presidents

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been the target of what the FBI said "appears to be an attempted assassination" at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, nine weeks after another attempt on his life.

The former president declared himself safe and well, and the suspect is being held by the authorities.

On Sunday, Secret Service officers saw a rifle barrel protruding from a fence in woodland and shot at a man who was hiding in the bushes.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the gunman abandoned the rifle, two backpacks, a GoPro camera and an aiming scope when an agent fired at him and drove off in an SUV. He was stopped by a police from a neighbouring county.

Three law enforcement sources have identified the person in custody as Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh owns a small construction company in Hawaii and is a strong supporter of Ukraine and has criticised Trump on social media.

This isn’t the first time Mr Trump has been targeted. He barely escaped being shot in the head during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in mid-July.

At the time, he expressed disbelief at the incident, Mr Trump said he "cannot believe" such an attack could happen in America. However, he is not the first US president to face an assassination attempt.

Below are the US presidents who have been targeted in office.

1865 – Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while at a theatre with his wife. The Republican – and 16th US president – died the next day, April 15, aged 56.

Booth was a Confederate, the losing side in the American civil war, and objected to Lincoln’s ending of slave ownership in the south.

1881 - James Garfield

The 20th president had only held office for six months when he was shot in the chest while walking through Washington train station.

He did not die for several weeks but medics were unable to find the bullet lodged in his chest. The gunman Charles Guitau was found guilty of murder and he was put to death.

1901 - William McKinley

The 25th president was shot by Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo, New York while shaking hands with supporters after giving a speech.

He had been expected to recover but died when gangrene set in around his wounds.

1933 - Franklin D Roosevelt

The wartime president survived an attempt on his life in Miami when Guiseppe Zangara shot at him at a rally on February 15. Zangara claimed to hate all rulers, having said: "I have the gun in my hand. I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists."

Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was killed in the attack for which Zangara was convicted and executed on March 20, 1933. Roosevelt was unharmed.

1950 - Harry S Truman

Another wartime president to have escaped, President Truman was shot at while staying in Blair House – across the street from the White House.

Oscar Callazo was convicted of his part in the attack, which killed a policeman. One of the assailants was also killed.

John F Kennedy

1963 - John F Kennedy

President Kennedy was shot dead while in a motorcade in Dallas alongside his wife on November 22.

Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested and then, while being taken to jail, was himself shot by Jack Ruby.

1975 - Gerald Ford

The 38th president survived two attempts on his life in 1975, firstly when Lynette Fromme – a Charles Manson protege – pushed through a crowd but did not fire her gun.

Sara Jane Moore took a shot 17 days later in San Francisco but missed the president. She served 32 years in prison.

Ronald Reagan survived an attempt on his life (PA)

1981 - Ronald Reagan

President Reagan was shot by John Hinckley in 1981 while giving a speech in Washington. He was very seriously injured, suffering a broken rib, a punctured lung and internal bleeding. However, he recovered and served two full terms as president, leaving office in 1989.

His press secretary was also shot and was paralysed as a result

2005 - George W Bush

The only effort to have taken place outside America, President Bush was in Tbilisi when a hand grenade was thrown at his party.

The grenade did not explode and the Republican left Georgia unscathed.

2024 - Donald Trump

Mr Trump was shot on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, with a bullet that just missed his ear. The 20-year-old attacker was shot dead by a sniper.

According to the FBI, he was the apparent target of another would-be assassin two months later while playing golf. The suspect is being held in custody.

On September 15 there was another apparent assassination attempt while he was golfing on his course in West Palm Beach.

Several Secret Service agents fired on a gunman in bushes near the property line of the golf course after he was spotted a few hundred yards from where Trump was playing, law enforcement officials said.
