First Lady Melania Trump appeared on Fox & Friends on Wednesday morning and spoke about her years growing up under communism. She said she did not miss anything and that she felt she had a very beautiful childhood. She also said her parents provided a beautiful life for her family.
Co-host Brian Kilmeade asked why Eastern Europeans like her fully understand the gift of freedom and liberty better than Western Europeans and sometimes better than Americans. He asked what it was about how she grew up.
Melania Trump said, “I grew up under communism, and actually, I didn’t miss anything. I feel I had a very beautiful childhood, and my parents provided a beautiful life for my family. But yes, there are certain things you need to be aware of, and you watch over what you do – it’s not as free as here in the United States. Now it’s a different time, but when I was growing up, it was not.”
First lady also discusses work to reunite Ukrainian children during the same interview
Earlier in the segment, co-host Lawrence Jones asked Melania Trump about her initiative to rescue Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia. He asked about her relationship with other world leaders’ wives and how she has used her power as first lady. Jones also asked who she talks to and works with behind the scenes.
Jones said she had reached out to Putin to get the Ukrainian children back home. Melania Trump answered, “Well, we have a direct channel with Russia and with Ukraine. My representative is working on that, and we are working on another reunification. This is ongoing, and we want to reunite as many children as possible – that’s my focus as well. What they’re going through is heartbreaking, and there’s nothing better to see than a child reunited with a parent.”
Kilmeade then said one of Vladimir Putin’s game plans was to capture some Ukrainian kids, try to indoctrinate them into Russian culture, and then give them to Russian families. He said she was trying to undo that. Melania Trump has also faced personal scrutiny, such as when Laura Benanti said a right-wing psychopath leaked her address for impersonating the former first lady.
Melania Trump said, “Correct. We are working together, and we have a very positive relationship – they understand what we want to achieve.” This positive dynamic contrasts with other public interactions, such as when Jill Biden described a frosty inauguration day encounter with Melania Trump in her new memoir.
She said the work is ongoing and that reuniting children with parents is part of her focus. She described what the children are going through as heartbreaking.
Mediaite pointed out that President Donald Trump and Fox News have long been very critical of communism. They have ramped up their focus on the anti-capitalist and often autocratic system amid the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America.
