It's no secret that faux plants can bring a certain level of apprehension in the design world. When we think of faux plants, plastic, and glaringly artificial variations often come to mind, failing to achieve the much sought-after texture and depth of real plants.
And while it's important to remember that decorating with plants that are real can be a more sustainable choice than their faux counterparts, there are some situations where real plants just aren't a practical option.
Interior designer and co-founder of McGee & Co., Shea McGee is one to back this claim, taking to Instagram to share a video in which she addresses the controversial subject of faux plants in the design world.
'Don’t let people shame you for using faux plants in your home,' says Shea. While real plants work well in rooms that receive plenty of natural light throughout the day, some spaces simply don't receive enough, making it tricky to keep plants alive and healthy. Shea continues: 'In a basement, it’s not going to stay alive. In a vacation home for our clients, it’s not going to stay alive. That is why we are developing beautiful faux options.'
NYC-based interior designer Kathy Kuo also remarks on the benefits of incorporating faux plants into your decor schemes when real plants aren't suitable: 'I love using faux plants as part of an interior design motif. These days, there are many beautifully crafted silk plants on the market that look exactly like the real thing so you don't have to sacrifice that natural and organic look.'
'The obvious upside is that you don't have to worry about caring for the plants when you're away or if you want to put them in a non-sunny spot – it's all of the style and none of the stress.'
