Don Omar is the Latest Puerto Rican Star to Endorse Kamala Harris After 'Island of Garbage' Comment

In Spanish

Puerto Rican artist William Omar Landrón, better known as Don Omar, has officially announced his support for Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

In a message highlighting his Puerto Rican pride and strongly rebuking former President Donald Trump's campaign attacks on Latinos, Don Omar urged his 12.6 million Instagram followers to reject "racist language."

"The possibility of Trump and his administration returning to power is truly worrying," the singer said.

His endorsement of Harris comes two days after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as "a floating island of garbage" in a Trump rally in New York, a controversial line that has caused a significant amount of backlash, with even the Trump campaign distancing itself from it.

Don Omar's message

"Puerto Rico is my homeland and my identity, and today, more than ever, I proudly raise my island's flag.

It's heartbreaking to hear the disdain and racist words directed at my land and at Latinos. Trump has made his views on us clear time and time again, and the thought of him and his administration returning to power is truly concerning. Words carry weight, and as a community, we must not tolerate language that aims to devalue us. Latinos, both in and out of our homelands, deserve respect and fair representation.

With just one week until the elections, let's make our voices heard loud and clear. That's why I support @kamalaharris. I trust she represents the respect and change our communities need and believe she can open a new path forward—one that uplifts, empowers, and prioritizes dignity for all.

It's time to turn the page. We are not going back."

Celebrities Supporting Kamala Harris

Dozens of Latino artists, U.S. citizens or not, have voiced opposition to Trump's candidacy and expressed support for Kamala Harris' campaign. The list is extensive, featuring Rubén Blades, Los Tigres del Norte, Maná, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jessica Alba, Demi Lovato, Alejandro Fernández, Ednita Nazario, Karla Monroig, and many more.

The wave of celebrities publicly declaring their political stances has surged since Hinchcliffe's remarks on Sunday.
