Don Nelson never needed an NBA championship ring as a coach to establish his place in basketball history.
By the time his coaching career ended, Nelson had won more regular-season games than anyone before him, collected five championships as a player and earned a place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. More importantly, he left behind ideas that would eventually become central to the way modern basketball is played.
