Domestic industry steels itself after tariff report

Australia would fall foul of international free trade rules if it expanded tariffs on steel imports, the Productivity Commission has found in a report that has prompted a scathing rebuke from domestic manufacturers.

An interim report by the federal government think tank found safeguard measures on imports on fabricated structural steel products - like columns, beams and girders - were not warranted.
