Dolphins, WR Odell Beckham Jr. mutually agree to his release

The Miami Dolphins are parting with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after an underwhelming nine games together, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Friday morning.

The news didn’t come out of nowhere. The veteran receiver missed back-to-back practices for what the team called personal reasons. Then on Thursday night, Beckham posted a cryptic message on Instagram that suggested his time in Miami was over.

According to Pelissero, the release of Beckham came, in part, because the receiver “is hoping for more opportunities elsewhere” after struggling to carve out a role with the Dolphins.

After beginning the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Beckham made his Dolphins debut in October, but recorded only nine receptions for 55 yards in nine games.

Receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, tight end Jonnu Smith, and running back De’Von Achane have been the top four options for Tua Tagovailoa with all racking up at least 70 targets this season. No other player on the team has been targeted even 20 times, although rookie receiver Malik Washington has seen a recent uptick in offensive snaps and played a career-high 30 on Sunday.
