MIAMI — At the age of 29, Tyreek Hill is a multi-time Pro Bowler, All-Pro selection and a Super Bowl champion.
And though the Dolphins wide receiver is still one of the best players in the NFL, he’s eyeing a potential retirement date.
“I’m going for 10 [years],” Hill told former Kansas City Chiefs teammates Anthony Sherman and Gehrig Dieter on radio station 810WHB. “I’m going to finish out this contract with the Dolphins, man, and then I’m going to call it quits. I want to go into the business side. ...
“I really want to get into the gaming space,” he continued. “I really want to get huge in that. That’s kind of what I’m doing now. I’m using my platform, I’m creating a gaming team. ... I’m just going to sign different content creators and different athletes.”
After the Dolphins made the blockbuster trade for Hill in March 2022, they subsequently gave him a record-breaking four-year extension worth $120 million through the 2026 season. Hill will be 32 at the end of his contract, but the Dolphins can save $45 million in cap space by releasing Hill after 2025.
In his first season in Miami, Hill set career-high numbers and broke franchise records for catches and receiving yards, registering 119 receptions for 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns en route to All-Pro honors.
Dolphins tried to trade for star tight end
Tight end is a position of need for the Dolphins after losing three players this offseason and only signing one so far, Eric Saubert.
But the Dolphins reportedly sought to improve the position group last year, too.
Agent Drew Rosenahus, speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, said the Dolphins were in negotiations with the Las Vegas Raiders to trade for tight end Darren Waller last offseason. Rosenhaus said the Green Bay Packers were also in talks to acquire the Pro Bowler. Las Vegas ultimately retained Waller and gave him a new deal in September 2022 that made him the league’s highest-paid tight end. The Raiders traded Waller to the New York Giants last month.
Though Rosenahus did not divulge when the trade discussions took place, it’s notable not only because of Waller’s reputation as one of the best players at his position but because the Dolphins placed the franchise tag on fellow tight end Mike Gesicki on March 8. Miami then executed its trade for Hill one week into free agency on March 23. Gesicki has since left in free agency, signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.
Smythe contract details
Tight end Durham Smythe’s two-year extension freed up about $1 million in cap space for the Dolphins, lowering his cap hit from $4.2 million to $3.1 million. It includes a signing bonus of $3.92 million and his $1.08 million base salary in 2023 is fully guaranteed.
$1.25 million of Smythe’s $3.125 million base salary in 2024 is guaranteed, while none of his $3.125 million base salary in 2025 is guaranteed. The deal also includes $250,000 annually in per-game roster bonuses.
