Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: QB Skylar Thompson

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After looking at starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and backup quarterback Mike White earlier in the week, we’ll move to the third-string option – Skylar Thompson.

General information

Name: Skylar Thompson
Position: QB
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 219 pounds
Age: 26
College: Kansas State
Free Agent Year: 2026

Background

Thompson was a seventh-round selection of the Dolphins last year after a six-year stint at Kansas State. He lit it up in the preseason, completing 75% of his attempts for 450 yards, a league-leading five touchdowns and no interceptions.

This performance forced Miami to keep him on the active roster for the start of the regular season, but he saw much more action than the team would’ve hoped.

Thompson played in eight games, including the Dolphins’ lone postseason appearance, completing just 52% of his passes for 754 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions.

Expected Role

Miami has Tagovailoa as the starter and signed White to be their backup after Teddy Bridgewater failed to live up to expectations last year. That means Thompson is entering camp as the third string, ahead of only undrafted rookie James Blackman.

Bottom Line

Thompson had some real highlights through training camp and preseason last year, and he’s already looking solid through minicamp and OTAs. However, after what we saw last year in the regular season, he’d have to really outshine White to take over as the backup.

With Tagovailoa’s injury history, he should be ready to go at all times, as he’s just a few poor minutes from playing time.
