The news of Dolly Parton’s death has been met with widespread heartbreak after the country music icon died at 80 following a “brief battle” with cancer.
Miley Cyrus, Parton’s goddaughter, remembered her “Aunt Dolly” as an “angel,” saying, “I will always love her and want to make her proud.”
“My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply,” Cyrus said.
Everyone from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé to Eminem and Linda Ronstadt paid tribute to Parton, describing her as “the gift that kept on giving” and saying her legacy would be “an everlasting one.” Paul McCartney also remembered Parton, saying her songwriting, singing, and philanthropy were “unrivaled in the world of country music.”
Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news of her death saying: “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus.” Her representative later confirmed that she had died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones.
US president Donald Trump ordered flags to fly at half-staff in the US to honor Parton, writing: “This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”

Dolly Parton, who was born in a two-room log cabin and rose to become the world’s wealthiest country music star with timeless hits including “9 to 5” and “Jolene,” has died aged 80 after a “brief battle with cancer.”
Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in an Instagram video posted Tuesday afternoon. The musician’s publicist confirmed Parton’s cancer diagnosis to the Associated Press later in the day, but did not give further details on her illness.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement from her reps to People magazine read.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library gifted 325m books before her death

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had gifted more than 325 million books to children by June 2026.
The initiative began in 1995 with an order of just over 1,700 books, and Parton created it after seeing how her father’s inability to read and write had limited his opportunities. The programme initially served children in Sevier County before expanding across Tennessee and then internationally, reaching Canada in 2006, the UK in 2007, Australia in 2013, and Ireland in 2019.
It reached its 100 millionth book in 2018 and its 200 millionth in 2023, before passing 300 million in November 2025. By June this year, more than 3.5 million books were being sent out every month.
Each child receives one free, age-appropriate book every month from birth until they turn five, regardless of their family’s income.
Parton once said that children calling her “the Book Lady” meant more to her than becoming a star.

Carly Pearce is among the artists scheduled to perform, bringing a particularly personal connection to the evening. Pearce began her career at Dollywood before Parton surprised her with an invitation to become an official Opry member in 2021.

Dollywood Parks & Resorts President Eugene Naughton reflected on the future of the theme park in light of the singer’s death.
“I want to speak directly to you to make sure you realize she’s alive and well here,” he said. “I know a lot of people are concerned that things are going to change without Dolly being present here, and I want to assure you that it’s not.”
Dollywood, which has been named after Parton for 40 years, remained open today, just “as Dolly wanted,” the park said in a release yesterday.

Sylvester Stallone, who costarred with Parton in the 1984 musical comedy Rhinestone, has paid tribute to the late star.
“I just heard that Dolly Parton passed away, and this strikes me very hard, because I felt she was a brilliant woman, so outgoing, so nice,” the actor began in a video shared on Instagram Wednesday.
Recalling their time filming together, Stallone said, “She would come onto the set and say, ‘Hi, y’all’ to every one of the crew members. Everyone loved her, and I don’t think people realize what a brilliant mind she had. She was just incredible. I used to call her ‘the Pioneer Woman’ that could do everything to survive. And she did.”
He remembered a time when they both mounted a horse and ended up falling off.
“Dolly’s going, ‘Are we falling?’ I go, ‘We are falling,’” he remembered. “This horse rolled all the way down. And we cascaded off of it and landed in the grass. And the horse rolled beside us. Oh my God, we would have been a couple of pancakes.”
Despite the fall, Parton’s reaction left Stallone smiling. “She got up laughing and goes, ‘Let’s do that again,’” he said.
Stallone ended the tribute, saying: “I miss you Dolly. I love you.”

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus had taken the stage together multiple times in recent years, and Miley had often credited the ‘9 to 5’ singer for championing her.
The pair were bonded when Billy Ray Cyrus asked Dolly if she would be the godmother to his newborn baby girl.
As Miley grew up – and graduated from Disney Channel star to a Grammy-winning recording artist – the two singers collaborated on multiple occasions, including when Parton made a cameo on Hannah Montana as the character Aunt Dolly.
Parton continued to make guest appearances on the show throughout its four seasons, including an episode in season two titled “I Will Always Loathe You” — a nod to Parton's timeless song “I Will Always Love You.” In the episode, Miley dressed up like Parton, wearing a platinum blond mullet-style wig.
The pair performed a rendition of Parton’s “Jolene” together in 2012 at the 25th anniversary of Dollywood, and Miley would go on to call her godmother her role model.
In 2019, the duo sang “Jolene” together again onstage at the Grammy Awards, where they were joined by Kacey Musgraves and Katy Perry.

Miley Cyrus has shared an emotional tribute to her “Aunt Dolly,” saying that her godmother would have wanted her to feel the grief, “write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong.”
“The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts,” Miley wrote.
“What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong. I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis.”
The post continued: “I will always love her and want to make her proud. My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things.”
The duo, who often took the stage together, are close family friends through Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.
Dolly and Billy bonded when he joined her 1992 tour as an opening act to promote his song “Achy Breaky Heart.” It was during that period that Billy asked the “9 to 5” singer if she would be godmother to his newborn baby girl, Miley.

In 2015, Dolly Parton wrote a song that she intended to be her last-ever released song, called “My Place In History.”
She recorded the song on a CD and put the CD in a chestnut box inside a glass case at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The box also includes a CD player, according to Business Insider.
The song is intended to be released on what would have been Parton’s 100th birthday in 2046.
“I don't know if I want to live to be 100 or not. But you never know,” the country legend wrote in her 2020 book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. “I might, and if I do, I'm going to be at that opening.”
She added: “There's no telling what music is going to be by then. Hopefully, it will play and the whole thing ain't rotted.”
The display also includes a piece of wood from Parton’s childhood home in Sevierville, Tennessee.

The singer said she was shocked to get the news from Parton, her longtime friend, because she had seemed fine the last time they spoke.
Cher, 80, went on to speak about her first impression of Parton, who she met at a party held by their shared manager.
“I walked in and I see this chick with this major hair and white pants and a jackety-shirt that fit her tight. I looked up and she had buttons on the... yoke, and I looked at it and i thought, I’ve never seen so many buttons in my life,” she said.

Sarah Jayne Crust, who has portrayed Parton for 32 years, told the PA: “Obviously I was heartbroken yesterday evening when I heard the news and it has been a bit of a rollercoaster since. She is such a global legend, superstar, everybody loves her and always will do. It is more apparent today.”
Crust, 49, said Parton has personally thanked her for her work. She added, “I will continue for the rest of my days.”
Kelly O’Brien, 52, is performing next week at Manchester Pride as The Dolly Show tribute act. She said she expects the show to be “tough.”
“It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be hard,” she told the PA. “It’s a great show that celebrates her life over seven decades.”

The park, which Parton helped establish in 1986 after partnering with Herschend Family Entertainment, welcomed visitors on Wednesday, one day after her death at 80. A representative told People that Parton had always emphasised that “the show must go on”.
Dollywood Parks & Resorts President Eugene Naughton also shared a tribute to its founder saying: “Dolly’s heart was as vast as the mountains she cherished, and her compassion knew no bounds. She inspired generations to dream boldly and love deeply. While we grieve her loss, we are honoured, and committed to carry her light forward.”
Parton’s connection to Dollywood went far beyond lending it her name. Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1995 in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write.
