DOJ Watchdog Debunks FBI Involvement In Capitol Riot

Insurrections loyal to President Donald Trump rally at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021. Documents unsealed this week say that a defendant who was sentenced in secret for his role

A recent report from the Justice Department's inspector general has debunked claims that undercover FBI employees were present at the US Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot. The investigation found that while there were no undercover agents at the rally, 26 confidential human sources, or paid FBI informants, were in Washington that day. However, these informants were not authorized to engage in illegal activities or incite others to do so.

The report also highlighted that the FBI did not fully utilize intelligence from informants across all field offices to better prepare for the events of January 6. Following the riot, the FBI mistakenly informed Congress that it had directed field offices to gather information from informants regarding potential threats related to the incident.

It was determined that the inaccuracies in reporting were unintentional. Despite claims from GOP lawmakers and Trump allies suggesting that law enforcement officials may have manipulated the situation, the inspector general's findings indicate that no informants were involved in orchestrating the violence.

Of the 26 informants present in Washington that day, three were specifically tasked by the FBI to monitor individuals linked to domestic terrorism cases who might attend the rallies. While one informant entered the Capitol, the others remained outside. The remaining 23 informants attended the events independently, with some entering the Capitol or its grounds during the riot.

Notably, none of the informants have faced criminal charges. FBI Director Christopher Wray has vehemently denied allegations that the bureau played a role in instigating the violence, emphasizing that the events of January 6 were not orchestrated by FBI sources or agents.

Despite these clarifications, unfounded theories persist among some lawmakers and the public. A recent poll revealed that a significant 25% of Americans believe it is 'probably' or 'definitely' true that the FBI had a hand in inciting the riot, underscoring the ongoing challenges in dispelling misinformation surrounding the events of January 6.
