A recent incident in Tulsa, Oklahoma serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. The Tulsa Fire Department shared a video captured from a home that shows a dog inadvertently causing a serious house fire by chewing on a lithium-ion battery.
The footage, posted on the fire department's Facebook page, depicts a dog chewing on a lithium-ion battery that was meant for charging cell phones. As the dog bites down on the battery, sparks begin to fly, eventually leading to a fire that engulfs the cushions on the floor of the living room where the incident took place.
Despite the alarming turn of events, the two dogs and a cat present in the home managed to escape through a pet door, avoiding any injuries. The fire, which occurred in May, caused significant damage to the Tulsa-area home.
According to the fire department, lithium-ion batteries have the potential to store a substantial amount of energy in a compact space. However, when these batteries are damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme heat, they can pose serious risks. Uncontrolled release of energy from lithium-ion batteries can generate heat, produce flammable and toxic gases, and even lead to explosions.
