Why the first fifteen minutes at a tap matter more than anything else
Rabies virus travels along nerve fibres, not through the bloodstream. That is why early local treatment can interrupt transmission before the virus reaches the central nervous system. Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least fifteen minutes. Soap disrupts the viral envelope. Running water flushes virus particles out of the wound rather than letting them pool. Do not pack the wound, do not apply turmeric or chilli powder, and do not close it with a bandage or cloth right away. After washing, apply a povidone-iodine solution or, if that is not available, any alcohol-based antiseptic. The World Health Organization includes thorough wound washing in its core post-exposure guidance precisely because it demonstrably reduces viral load at the entry point.
